I decided recently to switch out my D-Link DES-1024R 10/100 switch with a HP Procurve 3400CL Layer 3 switch.
I wanted to be able to setup vLANs and segregate my Virtual Machines into different ‘zones’ on the network, so this meant moving to a Managed switch (Layer 3) such as the HP Procurve.
But before I switched out, I want to make sure that the speed to my host computer did not diminish.
So I tested the download and upload speed using my favourite URL – speedtest.net.

Based on the above images, we can see that I have improved my download speed but lost a millisecond in Ping. To be honest I would prefer the improved download speed than ping response.
Now some of you may be wondering why my download speed is so slow. And that is because I am in Australia, and we are tend to be a bit behind most countries.
End of 2015, we had the 48th fastest average speed. 2016 we dropped two places to 50th. And now we are completely out of the top 50.
Some countries that are above Australia include USA, Japan, Canada, Kenya (WTF), Lithuanian, Germany and Malta.
Basically everyone.
Look at how it took for us to use Fibre. At least 10 years behind Japan.
So another 10 years before we have speeds that resemble anything like yours. One can only hope.
